First principles

Strip a problem to its fundamental truths and reason up from there.

Overview

First-principles thinking dismantles a problem down to the fundamental truths that cannot be reduced further — the things you know are true because they are physically or logically necessary — and rebuilds a solution up from those, ignoring the accumulated ‘this is how it’s done’ that everyone reasons by analogy from.

The method’s payoff is escaping inherited constraints. Most limits people accept are conventions dressed as laws. By asking ‘what do we actually know to be true here?’ you can discover that the expensive, obvious path was never mandatory.

Received wisdom says something is impossible or fixed, and you suspect the constraint is inherited, not real.

How to use it

Step 1

State the assumption

Write the accepted belief about what is possible, necessary, or fixed.

Ask why until you hit bedrock

Keep asking why each constraint holds until you reach something genuinely irreducible.

Step 3

Separate law from convention

Distinguish real constraints (physics, logic, cost of materials) from inherited habit.

Step 4

Rebuild from the fundamentals

Reason upward from the bedrock truths to a fresh solution, ignoring the conventional path.

Test the new construction

Check the reasoning against reality — first principles still have to survive contact with facts.

Worked example

Batteries are ‘expensive because batteries are expensive’ — reasoning by analogy. First principles ask what a battery actually is: a set of raw materials with a market price. Priced at the material level, the floor is far below the market price, revealing that manufacturing and scale, not physics, set the cost — which changes what is worth attempting.
