Abstraction laddering

Move up for ‘why’ and down for ‘how’ to frame a problem at the right level.

Overview

Abstraction laddering treats a problem statement as a rung on a ladder. Ask ‘why?’ and you climb toward broader, more abstract framings; ask ‘how?’ and you descend toward concrete, specific ones. Where you stand on the ladder silently determines which solutions are even visible.

Most stuck problems are framed at the wrong altitude. Too low and you optimise a detail that does not matter; too high and you drown in vague ambition with no traction. The tool lets you deliberately move until the framing opens up useful solution space.

When to use it

A problem feels stuck, too narrow, or too vague — you suspect you are solving the wrong version of it.

How to use it

Step 1

Write the current problem

State it as you have it now — that is your starting rung.

Step 2

Climb up with ‘why?’

Ask why this matters. Each answer is a broader framing that may reveal bigger options.

Step 3

Descend with ‘how?’

Ask how you would solve it. Each answer is a more concrete framing you can act on.

Step 4

Scan the ladder

Look at the framings you generated and notice which altitude opens the most promising solutions.

Step 5

Re-state at the best level

Rewrite the problem at the rung where good solutions become visible.

Worked example

A team is stuck on ‘how do we make our app’s search faster?’ Climbing with ‘why?’ reaches ‘why do users search?’ → ‘to find a document they know exists’ → which reframes the problem as ‘help users find known documents’. Suddenly pinned recents and better naming beat any search-speed fix. The solution was one rung up.
