Overview

The Productive Thinking Model is a six-step process that deliberately alternates between opening up (diverging to generate) and narrowing down (converging to choose). Its discipline is separating those two modes, which people normally jam together — judging ideas as they generate them and killing the good ones early.

It carries a problem from an honest look at the current mess, through defining the real question, to generating and then selecting solutions, and finally to a concrete plan — so creativity actually reaches execution instead of dying as a nice idea.

Complex problems that need both divergent creativity and convergent rigour, not just a quick fix.

How to use it

Step 1

What’s going on?

Explore the situation, the itch, and the facts before defining anything.

Step 2

What’s success?

Define what a solved problem would look like — the target criteria.

Step 3

What’s the question?

Frame the real catalytic question the solution must answer.

Step 4

Generate answers

Diverge widely — many candidate solutions, no judgement yet.

Step 5

Forge the solution

Converge — select and strengthen the best answers against your success criteria.

Step 6

Align resources

Build the concrete plan: who, what, when, so the solution actually ships.

A nonprofit with falling donations runs the model. ‘What’s going on’ reveals donors feel disconnected, not broke. ‘Success’ is defined as renewed engagement, not just money. The catalytic question becomes ‘how might we make donors feel their impact?’ Divergence yields dozens of ideas; convergence forges a personalised impact report; alignment schedules it. The staged process kept a good idea alive to execution.
